The first of the 10 Commandments says “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” This commandment found in Exodus 20 is startling to most Americans. Our culture has emphasized religious tolerance to an unhealthy and unbiblical extreme.
“No other gods” means that there is only one true God. The implication is that not every religious road leads to heaven. The Bible presents us with one God whose name is Jehovah, and He is seen in the person and work of Jesus Christ.
He is the loving, holy, and powerful God who is our Provider, Sustainer, Creator, and Savior.
Isaiah tells us that He is “Wonderful, Counsellor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.” All of these titles are individual reasons why He alone deserves our worship. But in spite of the magnificent nature of God, the most prevalently worshiped false god is not Buddha or Mohammed, but instead, it is the idol of self.
Most people will live today for self, not for God. We live in a "me” culture. As sinful human beings, we can easily become obsessed with ourselves. The heart-cry of the average 21st century person is "coddle me," "promote me," "exhalt me," and "adore me."
Dear Christian, beware of the idol of "me.” Remember there is one God and you’re not Him. Don't forget, God does not exist for us, we exist for Him.
Live out today with Him as your focus. As you face today’s responsibilities, take time to promote Him, exhalt Him, and adore Him. There’s only one God, and thou shalt have no other gods before Him. Make today about HIM.
